Pure copper and bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, were used indiscriminately at first; this early period is sometimes called the rock carvings of southern Scandinavia have been inthe public domain for well over a century, thanks to the pioneering workof discovery and record carried out in Bohuslan in western Sweden,Ostfold in southeastern Norway and in a few other regions as well.Naturally enough, the early records were concerned mostly with thelarge, easily found sites such as Vitlycke, Backa and Aspeberget wherehundreds of carvings could be seen. The bulk of sites, however, haveremained unrecorded even in the most popular areas, in part due to thedifficulties of documentation but also because of the huge numbers ofsites that are known or suspected to exist. Bohuslan has over 4500 sitesaccording to according toprep.1. As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians.2. In keeping with: according to instructions.3. recent work. For some years now, part of this province has had World Heritagestatus, conferred because of the rock carvings; and a new museum, dedicated to the carvings, has been built and attracts over 100,000visitors a year to the immediate area. Much of the museum's task isto present information about rock carvings to the public, but an alliedaim is to continue and expand the documentation of rock carvings inwestern Sweden. The books here reviewed are the first fruits of thislatter policy, and are based upon a museum archive that is undercontinuous development, both in refining the records and in theirenlargement enlargement,n an increase in size.enlargement, Dilantin,n.pr See hyperplasia, gingival, Dilantin.enlargement, idiopathic,n . The Vitlycke Museum Archaeological Reports are now at a stage wherewe can begin to see what has been achieved, and to anticipate what isyet to come. The first five are very much a mixed bag and it is volumes3 and 4 that appear to set the standard for the future. First, however, the Museum felt impelled impel?tr.v. impelled, impelling, impels1. To urge to action through moral pressure; drive: I was impelled by events to take a stand.2. To drive forward; propel. to publish the records of sites accumulatedover 40 years of work by Torsten Hogberg (1915-1999) whose archive ofphotos and plans is now fully accessed into the Museum. The two volumesbased on his work, numbers 1 and 5, include many large and well-knownsites, and much else besides. The books, skilfully Adv. 1. skilfully - with skill; "fragments of a nearly complete jug, skillfully restored at the institute of archaeology"skillfullyskilfully(US), skillfully adv → habilementedited in the main byLasse Bengtsson, are necessarily uneven, some sites illustrated byphotos or plans, or only individual carvings or sectors of sites, andsome sites not illustrated at all. Brief descriptions of each site, inboth Swedish and English, give some detail of the number of images, andshort directions as to where to locate the sites also appear, althoughthe latter are quite difficult to use if unfamiliar with the terrain.Better maps (see below) would help. The parish numbers, e.g. Tanum 123,are consistently used, and it would certainly be helpful if the localnames for sites could be added, as these would help in confirmingrelationships with other, older, publications where parish numbers werenot employed (e.g. Tanum 357 is Sottorp, and Tanum 160 is Stora Hoghem). The quality of reproduction of site plans is very good and the photosalso serve as guides to the condition of the images when Hogbergrecorded them. One of the photos of a fine boat (p. 77) seems to beprinted in reverse according to its plan (p. 75). The maps in these two volumes are schematic A graphical representation of a system. It often refers to electronic circuits on a printed circuit board or in an integrated circuit (chip). See logic gate and HDL. The site numbers are clearand precise, and with a modern topographical map See under Cadastral. - Topographical surveying. See under Surveying.See also: Topographic the sites can usuallybe found, although the amount of scrubland and new woodland increasinglymasks the rock surfaces. The site plans are set out clearly but atdifferent scales, so Tanum 368 has very large images, Tannin tannin, tannic acid,or gallotannic acid, astringent vegetable product found in a wide variety of plants. Sources include the bark of oak, hemlock, chestnut, and mangrove; the leaves of certain sumacs; and plant galls. 311 and 160very small, although both the latter are complex sites and could do withenlarged presentations. A uniform scale for site plans would be anadvantage. Volume 2 is a slender book and presents some of the rock carvingsof an adjacent province, Dalsland, as a supplement to a previouspublication of a majority of carvings in the area. The details of thenew sites are clearly presented, although plans are shown without rocksurface features; nonetheless this too is a useful record. When we come to volumes 3 and 4, we can see how the newdocumentation policy of the Museum is beginning to tackle the hugeproblems of rock carvings in Bohuslan. Away from the concentration ofimpressive and well-known sites in Tanum parish, other parishes havenumerous and unappreciated sites, few properly recorded and published.Because of the threats of increasing degradation of the rock carvings, known and unknown, steps are under way to find new sites and to documentboth old and new into the archive. For some years now, the Museum hasworked in Askum parish, and the two volumes record a major part of theparish. When the survey started, perhaps 70 sites were known in theparish, and volumes 3 and 4 present us with 220 sites, with another 100still to be published in volume 6 (2002). A brief description of themethods of discovery and recording appears in the books, but masks thetremendous amount of work needed in clearing likely looking surfaces asthe team moved along the rock faces. The few critical remarks hereshould not diminish the achievement of these two books. The site plansare well presented, although at different scales, and there are nophotos--the best indication of rock surfaces and character of carving. The maps of the parish sectors, northern in volume 3, middle in volume4, are detailed and very useful for field visits, but could bepositioned to be more user-friendly, facing one another in volume 3 andwith clearer joins in volume 4. The sites themselves are quite sensational, some large and complex, others smaller, and there are many individual carvings of fine qualityand design, The presentation of these sites as a geographical entity iscrucial, as it allows us to better understand the place of the carvingsin the landscape of the Bronze Age, in their relationship to othercontemporary monuments and activities, as well as to appreciate theimages as reflections of the systems of belief and commemoration in theBronze Age of the north. The books also convey some apprehension aboutthe long-term survival of the carvings in the light of the documenteddeterioration of rock surfaces elsewhere in Bohuslan. The VitlyckeMuseum and its support base are to be congratulated on establishing thisseries of books and in recognizing the importance of a policy ofconsistent documentation for research and public appreciation, both nowand in the future.
