Thumbs down.
Thumbs down. Diversity on television--good. Segregating teams by race for thesake of competition--not so good. In what CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast. producers are calling a "race against races,""Survivor: Cook Island," will host four teams--Asian, Black,Hispanic and White, in efforts to "bring more ethnic diversity tothe competition." Everyone else, though, is saying that the show is exploiting racialtensions for ratings. "If they shoot the show in a way that blows the roof off ofstereotypes, that would be one thing," says Leigh Hallisey, aprofessor of television and film at Boston University Boston University,at Boston, Mass.; coeducational; founded 1839, chartered 1869, first baccalaureate granted 1871. It is composed of 16 schools and colleges. . "But TV isvery conservative. They play into type and when they do so, it's tostratify stratify?v. stratified, stratifying, stratifiesv.tr.1. To form, arrange, or deposit in layers.2. people, not bring them together." "Cook Island" sounds like a fine opportunity to reinforcestereotypes and highlight differences--although we expect only tamereferences with few surprises--after all, this is Hollywood. The newseason debuted Sept. 14.
