Tour for Two.
Tour for Two. * Tour for Two, by Eugenie Rocherolle. Hal Leonard Corporation,2010. www.halleonard.com; 39 pp., $7.99. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Eugenie Rocherolle has made a significant contribution to the youngduet repertoire with Tour for Two. The "tour" explores musicfrom all over the world, ranging in style from Arabian to American jazz, from an Irish jig to the East, from Russia to a Latin habanera and wouldbe a great addition to any recital or duet festival. The pieces soundmore complex than they actually are, and much enjoyment awaits thestudent, teacher and audience alike. All of the parts fit the hand well and would be practical for lateelementary students to early intermediate students. The hands movesomewhat within each given piece, but it is fairly minimal. I founddisagreement with a few fingerings and would change them when teachingthe pieces to eliminate unnecessary hand movements. Mostly, though, within each part, the music flows nicely from one hand to the other. The pieces explore major and minor tonalities with one piece evenbeing in the pentatonic. The melodic lines are singable, predictable andcatchy. Overall, the music is appealing and just plain fun to play! Theword "tour" can also be applied to the rhythmic explorations, which include swung eighths, syncopations, fast duple meters and triplemeters felt in two. Some great musical opportunities lie within the ensemble. Theseopportunities include passage work in octaves between players, tempofluctuations, pedaling, canonic entrances, as well as trading of linesfrom one player to the other. Also, each part calls for utmost security,as each player works independently of each other. Tour for Two is full of duets that will motivate a variety ofstudents and offers great opportunities for discussion and explorationof less familiar sounds and world styles.--Reviewed by Erika Kinser,Kansas City, Missouri * The items marked with this symbol can be ordered via the MTNAwebsite through our affiliation with Amazon.com.
