Appendix B: Template for institute design.

Appendix B: Template for institute design. Location and Theme Decide on site and theme. The theme and site should be linked insome intellectual way. What specific issues will the participantsinvestigate? Why choose this particular location for the inquiry? Howmany different perspectives can you provide on the topic? Whatpre-institute readings might be appropriate for the theme? (Someexamples of themes and readings of past institutes are given in AppendixA.) Activities and Options To successfully plan a Faculty Institute, the planners shouldconsider the following questions: What will the schedule be? Plan a schedule that permits enough timefor City as Text[TM] explorations, large group discussions and seminars, reflective Refers to light hitting an opaque surface such as a printed page or mirror and bouncing back. Be sure to include an initial icebreaker icebreaker, ship of special hull design and wide beam, with relatively flat bottom, designed to force its way through ice. When the icebreaker charges into the ice at full speed, its sharply inclined bow, meeting the edge of the ice, rises upon it, and the weight of for the groupto bond and a final dinner or closing party. Consider the logistics ofgetting to the site since participants may be coming from across thecountry. How much perceived risk do you want participants to experience? Howuncomfortable do you want participants to be? How much of a challenging, intellectual, outward-bound experience do you anticipate forparticipants? What resources and logistics--human and other--will you need?Consider facilitators, student assistants, translators (depending onlocation), local experts, guest speakers, buses/vans, publictransportation, and meeting locations. What space will you need forreflective/writing activities and large group discussions and seminars? Consider transportation and lodging Lodging or holiday accommodation is a type of accommodation. People who travel and stay away from home for more than a day need lodging mainly for sleeping. Other purposes are safety, shelter from cold and rain, having a place to store luggage and being able to take a costsfor facilitators. What transportation costs will be incurred byparticipants? What meals and lodging (if any) will be covered by theinstitute budget? What fees (entrance to parks and museums, tours, etc.)are involved with the various institute activities? Will any honorariumsbe required? How much lead time do you need to schedule activities and socialfunctions? Consider meeting room, vehicle, and hotel reservations? Howmuch institutional support do you need for the institute? How will you advertise the institute? Consider brochure andweb-page designs. What will the printing and mailing costs be? Institute Evaluation How will you evaluate the success of the institute? The followingare typical questions included in an effective evaluation: Consider the kinds of activities that were folded into thisinstitute: explorations (on foot, bus, bike, other); readings;discussions; small-group work; writing. What would you say each of themcontributed to your learning about the themes of this institute? Be sureto consider the experiential-learning seminar and the review of writtenassignments. What do you now know or understand better/differently about thethemes of this institute than when you arrived? To what aspect(s) of the institute do you attribute this learning/insight? If you were to apply elements of this institute to a course youteach, which one(s) would you try to incorporate? For what specificexpected outcome? What was your overall impression of the institute? Was it what youexpected? Are there any activities that should be added to or should beexcluded from a similar future institute?
